HPCL is an Indian Govt. company that operates downstream refining of crude oil into petroleum & hydrocarbon products and is headquartered in Mumbai, India. Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd. (HPCL) is a Maharatna CPSE. It had originally been incorporated as a company under the Indian Companies Act 1913. HPCL owns & operates 2 major refineries producing a wide variety of petroleum fuels & specialties, one in Mumbai (West Coast) and the other in Visakhapatnam, (East Coast). HPCL also owns and operates the largest Lube Refinery in the country producing Lube Base Oils of international standards. This Lube Refinery accounts for over 40% of the India's total Lube Base Oil production. HPCL in collaboration with M/s Mittal Energy Investments is operating Refinery at Bathinda.  HPCL has set-up its prestigious ‘HP Green R&D Centre’ at Bengaluru, India in 2016 with an objective to develop innovative & path breaking technologies and products.

HPCL is committed to achieve the economic, ecological & social responsibility objectives of sustainable development consistently through varied operations and activities. HPCL’s focus areas are in the fields of Child Care, Education, Health Care, Skill Development & Community Development, touching lives of weaker section of society.

Currently, the company provides fueling services to the aviation industry through its business unit, ‘HP Aviation’ also fondly called ‘Hindustan Aviation’. Its network covers all the major airports in India and is continuously expanding. HP Retail Business unit of HPCL is engaged in making available automotive fuels/ lubricants and other value added services for the automobile / private transport sector across the country, through a dedicated network of Retail Outlets, commonly known as Petrol Pumps.

The Retail unit is so named, as it involves dispensing fuels of relatively smaller volumes to the vehicle fuel tank. HPCL has laid pipelines for transportation of Petroleum Products to ensure product availability to its Consumers and the Public at large. City Gas Distribution (CGD), HPCL is operating City Gas Distribution (CGD) networks in several Geographical Areas (GAs) in the states of Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Madhya Pradesh through Joint Venture companies Aavantika Gas Limited (AGL), Bhagyanagar Gas Limited (BGL) and Godavari Gas (GGPL). HPCL is also operating a CNG network in Ahmedabad on standalone basis.

The Company is engaged in the business of refining of crude oil and marketing of petroleum products, Aviation Bulk Fuels And Specialities, International Trade, LPG (HP Gas), Lubes (HP Lubes), Retail (Petrol Pumps, etc.), Exploration & Production, Alternate Energy. The company (as Esso and Caltex prior to 1974) has been providing aviation refueling services at various airports in India for more than half a century.

Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL) incorporated in 1974, is an Indian public sector oil and natural gas company, it's headquarters is situated in Mumbai, capital of  Maharashtra. The company has a strong marketing infrastructure. 

This company holds the ranking of 367th among the Fortune Global 500 list, that is the world's biggest corporation as per the 2016 data. HPCL produces some of the following major products: Petroleum, Lubricants, Natural gas, Petrochemicals, LNG. 

The company is developing progressively every year and operates two major refineries generating vast variety of fuels, one of them is situated in Mumbai known as West Coast and second is situated in Visakhapatnam known as East Coast producing 7.5 million/ year and 8.3 million/ year respectively on their coats. 

HPCL is the largest lubricant refinery company in India, by generating lube base oils of international standards. It is listed in Bombay Stock Exchange with a BSE Code of 500104 and National Stock Exchange with an NSE Symbol of HINDPETRO and ISIN of INE094A01015. It's Registered office is at Petroleum House,17 Jamshedji Tata Road, Churchgate Mumbai-400020, Maharashtra.


On 19 July 2017, the Government of India announced that Oil and Natural Gas Corporation had acquired Hindustan Petroleum Corporation. On 1 November 2017, ONGC was approved by Union Cabinet to acquire a majority stake in HPCL (Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited) of 51.11 per cent. On 30 January 2018, the entire 51.11 per cent stake of Hindustan Petroleum Corporation was acquired by Oil & Natural Gas Corporation and thus became the company's promoter. Although ONGC Holds in the Company 51.1 per cent, HPCL refuses to identify it as a promoter. The reason given for this is that most board of directors are from the Indian government and not from ONGC.

Services and products produced by HPCL in India are as follows: 
Petrol is known as the engine spirit in the oil industry. HPCL retail it through petrol pumps all over India.
Diesel is known as high-speed oil. HPCL retails this product through its numerous pumps as well as terminals and depots. 
Lubricants: HPCL is the market leader in lubricants and associated products. It commands over 30% of the market share in this sector. 
Liquified petroleum gas: The HPCL brand of LPG is a popular brand across India for domestic and industrial uses.
Aviation turbine fuel: With major air service facilities in all major airports of India, HPCL is a key player in this sector supplying ATF to major airlines. It has an accomplishment of sorts to supply fuel to the US.
