Bharat Petroleum Corporation ( BPCL) was established in 1952. It is one of the leading company in the petroleum sector in India.The 1860s saw vast industrial development. A lot of petroleum refineries also came up. An important player in the South Asian market then was the Burmah Oil Company. Though incorporated in Scotland in 1886, the company grew out of the enterprises of the Rangoon Oil Company, which had been formed in 1871 to refine crude oil produced from primitive hand dug wells in Upper Burma.  The search for oil in India began in 1886, when Mr. Goodenough of McKillop Stewart Company drilled a well near Jaypore in upper Assam and struck oil. In 1889, the Assam Railway and Trading Company (ARTC) struck oil at Digboi marking the beginning of oil production in India.

On 24th January 1976, the Burmah Shell Group of Companies was taken over by the Government of India to form Bharat Refineries Limited. On 1st August 1977, it was renamed Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited. It was also the first refinery to process newly found indigenous crude (Bombay High), in the country.

BPCL is into exploration, production and retailing of petroleum and petrol related products.The retail busines unit of BPCL is into marketing of petrol, diesel and kerosene .It has network of 6553 retail outlets and 1007 kerosene dealers and is partnered with big food chain companies like McDonald’s, Pizza Hut, Café Coffee Day, Subway, Nirulas , etc.

It also offers full range of automotive engine, gear oils, transmission oils, speciality oils and greases .It caters to around 8000 industrial customers across India.It also provide Aviation Turbine fuel (ATF) to its airline customers.

Its LPG business unit “Bharatgas” has presence in 25 million households with 2137 LPG distributors spread across the country.

BPCL has two refineries at Mumbai and Kochi  with a capacity of 12 Million Metric Tonnes Per Annum (MMTPA) and 7.5 MMTPA for refining crude oil. Its subsidiary at Numaligarh has capacity of 3 MMTPA.

BPCL is one of the supplier of naptha in Andhra Pradesh has committed to AP Transco to supply sufficient quantities of naptha for operation of its four power station.

BPCL has launched a GPS technology for tracking vehicles for its 5,200 tanker trucks fleet.This system will help the company track the trucks for better logistic efficiency.This will result in prevention of pilferages and fuel adulteration.


BPCL won PetroFed ‘Oil & Gas Marketing Company of the Year’ award for the year 2006-07. This Award fis given as a recognition for increase in volumes of products marketed.

BPCL won the ‘Excellent Water Efficient Unit Award -Beyond the Fence’ at the National Awards for Excellence in Water Management 2007

BPCL was ranked 287th position during 2007-08 in Fortune Global 500 list .

BPCL's Mumbai Refinery won the Smart Workplace Award 2008 under the industrial manufacturing category given by Economic Times in association with IT majors, Acer and Intel.

BPCL has secured 271 st  ranking during 2010-11  in the prestigious list of Fortune Global 500 as compared to 309 th position last year.

BPCL Kochi Refinery has bagged the Excellence Award for Pollution Control among very large industries in Kerala on 5th june 2011.

Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd runs the petroleum industry in India. It is a private limited company incorporated on November 3, 1952, with the name Burmah Shell Refineries Ltd. It started working on the marshland of Trombay at Bombay. It operates in a single division, i.e. Refinery & Marketing activities which contain the downstream petroleum sector. It is also engaged in the Exploration & Production of Hydrocarbons. Its infrastructure includes a network of installations, retail outlets, LPG distributors, aviation service stations, & BPCL share price and stock analysis.

In 2001-2002:  It authorised the Gas Turbine and Heat Recovery Steam Generator project at the cost of Rs.1750 million. 
The 222 ATMs in the network are the result of association with 22 banks. 
In 2009-2010: the Mumbai refinery refined the Nigerian crude oil - Agbami for the first time. 
It has begun functioning at its Bina refinery in the central Indian state of Madhya Pradesh by commencing its crude distillation unit or CDU. 
The CDU at Bina was commissioned. Kerosene & cooking gas has been transmitted to the marketing terminal. 
Indian Oil Corporation Ltd Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd & Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited launched into a memorandum of understanding with Gujarat State Petroleum Corp Ltd to make a joint venture for trunk gas pipelines. 
In 2011: Tyre manufacturer Goodyear India launched an agreement with PSU primary Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd to set up tyre care shops at some of their petrol pumps. BPCL 
In 2012: Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd. signed a memorandum of understanding with LG Chem South Korea for a Joint Venture to open a petrochemical plant adjacent to its Kochi Refinery Complex. 
In 2015: It has got approval from the Environment Ministry for expansion at its refinery facility of Rs 4588 cr. 
It has declared that it had launched into a binding Gas Sale & Purchase Agreement with Petronet LNG Limited to acquire an additional 0.1 MMTPA of RLNG. 
It has announced that it had bought 50% of financial institutions' holding in Sabarmati Gas (SGL). 
In 2016: Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited, Indian Oil Corporation Limited & Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited has signed a group agreement to execute pre-project activities to open a West Coast Refinery & Petrochemical project Maharashtra. 
In 2017, BPCL’s Board of Directors had provided in-principle approval for Petronet CCK Ltd’s merger.
