Overview

NHPC (Formerly known as National Hydroelectric Power Corporation) was incorporated in 1975 under Companies Act, 1956 as a private limited company. The company was converted to a public limited company with effect from April 2, 1986. NHPC is a Navratna Central Public Sector Enterprise of Government of India. The company is mandated to plan, promote and organize an integrated and efficient development of power in all its aspects through Conventional and Non-Conventional Sources in India and abroad. NHPC is a listed company on NSE and BSE after successfully concluding its IPO in 2009.

The company is actively participating in the renewable energy growth story of India by contributing to the Government of India’s ambitious target of development of 50% power from non-fossil fuel sources by 2030. NHPC is making significant efforts to contribute towards Govt of India’s RE generation targets by exploring all possible opportunities to develop solar parks/Floating solar projects, develop solar power projects under CPSU Scheme, pilot Green Hydrogen Projects, Pumped Storage Projects in various potential rich states across the Country.

The company has been designated as Renewable Energy Implementing Agency (REIA) by MNRE. The company has also been designated as BESS Implementing Agency (BIA) to act as intermediary procurer for developments of BESS projects anywhere in India.

NHPC is the largest hydropower development organization in India, with capabilities to undertake all the activities from conceptualization to commissioning of hydro projects. The company has also diversified in the field of Solar & Wind energy development etc.

  • 1975-76:  Incorporation of the company.
  • 1976-77:  Transfer of the Loktak hydroelectric project (105 MW) from GoI to the company.
  • 1977-78:  Transfer of the Baira Siul hydroelectric project (180 MW) from GoI to the company.
  • 1982-83:  Baira Siul power station (180 MW) in Himachal Pradesh commissioned.
  • 1983-84: All units of Devighat power station in Nepal commissioned ahead of schedule-Loktak power station (105 MW) in Manipur commissioned.
  • 1985-86: Hydro Power Training Institute set up at the Baira Siul hydroelectric project to train operators and supervisory staff.
  • 1986- 87: First issue of 14% 7 years, redeemable secured non convertible bonds amounting to Rs.143.64 crore Nuwakot Rural Electrification project in Nepal completed ahead of schedule.
  • 1987-88: Establishment of a satellite telecommunication network taken up to link various projects of the company.
  • 1989-90: GoI upgraded the company from a Schedule ‘B’ to a Schedule ‘A’ corporation.
  • 1992-93: A consultancy wing set up to provide a range of specialised services in the investigation, design, construction and operation of hydel projects-Tanakpur power station (120 MW) in Uttarakhand commissioned.
  • 1994-95: Awarded the lining work of Jawahar Tunnel in Jammu & Kashmir -The company declared its maiden dividend of Rs. 5 crore for the year ending March 31.
  • 1994: The company’s registered office started operating from its present building in Faridabad-Chamera I power station (540 MW) in Himachal Pradesh commissioned.
  • 1995-96: Agreement signed for execution of Kurichhu hydroelectric project (45 MW) in Bhutan
  • 1997-98: Uri power station (480 MW) in Jammu & Kashmir commissioned.
  • 1999-2000:  Rangit power station (60 MW) in Sikkim commissioned.
  • 2000-01: Three units of 45 MW Kurichhu power station in Bhutan commissioned by the company ahead of schedule-The company and the government of Madhya Pradesh entered into an MoU to exploit the hydro electric potential of the Narmada basin by completing the Indira Sagar and Omkareshwar projects The company and the government of Jammu & Kashmir entered into an MoU to exploit the power potential of the state.
  • 2002-03: A line of credit for a tenor of 19 years taken from LIC for an amount of Rs. 2,500 crore, the company was accorded ‘AAA’ credit rating for domestic borrowing and ‘BB’ credit rating at par with sovereign rating of international borrowings by Fitch Ratings.
  • 2003-04: Chamera- II power station (300 MW) in Himachal Pradesh commissioned.
  • 2004-05: Indira Sagar hydroelectric project (1,000 MW) of NHDC, a joint venture of the company and the government of Madhya Pradesh in Madhya Pradesh commissioned.
  • 2005-06: ERP initiated under the name Project Kiran.
  • 2006-07: The company entered into an agreement with Government of Bhutan for preparation of DPR of Mangdechhu project (672 MW) in Bhutan.
  • 2007-08: The name of the company changed to its present name NHPC Limited-Dulhasti power station (390 MW) commissioned-Teesta-V power station (510 MW) commissioned-Omkareshwar hydroelectric project (520 MW) of NHDC, a joint venture of the company and the government of Madhya Pradesh, commissioned-The company entered into an MoA with the government of Arunachal Pradesh to execute the Dibang multipurpose hydroelectric project-The company entered into an MoU with the government of Manipur to exploit the hydro electric potential of the tailrace discharge of Loktak Downstream Hydroelectric Project.
  • 2008-09: The company conferred Mini Ratna Category I status by the GoI-The company entered into an MoU with the government of Jammu & Kashmir, JKSPDC and PTC to incorporate a joint venture to develop the Pakal Dul and other hydro projects in the Chenab River Basin-Incorporation of joint venture company, National Power Exchange Limited, along with NTPC, PFC and Tata Consultancy Services Limited.
  • 2009-10: Incorporation of a joint venture company, National High Power Test Laboratory Private Limited, along with NTPC, Powergrid Corporation of India Limited and Damodar Valley Corporation.
  • 2013: A Memorandum of Understanding has been signed between NHPC Limited and Uttar Pradesh New & Renewable Energy Development Agency, Department of Additional Sources of Energy, Govt. of Uttar Pradesh on August 08, 2013 at Lucknow for implementation of Solar Power Project in Uttar Pradesh.
  • 2013: NHPC has signed an agreement with Government of Odisha and Odisha Hydro Power Corporation Limited (OHPC) for formation of a Joint Venture company for implementation of six hydroelectric projects with an aggregate installed capacity of 1020 MW.
  • 2013: NHPC has inked a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Chhattisgarh State Power Holding Company Limited (CSPHCL) and Indian Farmers Fertiliser Cooperative Limited (IFFCO Limited).

  • 2021: NHPC has signed a Supplementary MoU with Jammu and Kashmir State Power Development Corporation and Power Development Department, Govt. of UT of Jammu & Kashmir for implementation of Ratle HE Project (850 MW) in Union Territory of Jammu & Kashmir through a Joint Venture Company (JVC).
  • 2021: NHPC has incorporated a joint venture (JV) firm Ratle Hydroelectric Power Corporation for implementing 850 MW Ratle project in the union territory of Jammua and Kashmir.
  • 2021: NHPC has signed MoU with Bihar State Hydro-Electric Power Corporation (BSHPCL) for execution of Dagmara HE Project (130.1 MW) in the State of Bihar by NHPC on ownership basis. 
  • 2021: NHPC and NTPC have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for ‘cooperation in overseas power sector’. The MoU includes taking up of project development, capacity building, O&M, RMU and other consultancy assignments outside India jointly by NHPC & NTPC.
  • 2021: NHPC has commissioned Unit 3 (60 MW) of Bairasiul Power Station (3 X 60 MW) in Himachal Pradesh after completion of Renovation and Modernization works.
  • 2022: NHPC has signed a letter of intent (LoI) to build renewable energy projects of 10,000 MW in Rajasthan. A LoI has been signed between the company and Rajasthan Renewable Energy Corporation (RRECL) for development of 10,000 MW Renewable Energy Projects/ Parks in Rajasthan.
  • 2022: NHPC has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the district administration of Chamba, Himachal Pradesh for development of green hydrogen technologies to produce hydrogen.
  • 2022: NHPC has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Damoder Valley Corporation (DVC) to ‘Explore formation of Joint Venture company (JVC) for exploring and setting up Hydropower and Pump Storage Projects'.
  • 2022: NHPC has signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Investment Board Nepal (IBN), Govt. of Nepal. The MoU is for preparation of Detailed Project Report (DPR) and development of two hydropower projects namely West Seti (750 MW) and Seti River 6 project (450 MW) in Nepal.
  • 2023: NHPC has received Letter of Intent (LOI) from Gujarat Urja Vikas Nigam (GUVNL) for 200 MW capacity Solar Power Project within 600 MW GSECL’s Solar Park at Khavda (GSECL Stage-1).
  • 2023: NHPC and Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) under which NHPC will provide consultancy services to KSEB as its Owner’s Engineer for vetting of design of KSEB’s ongoing projects as well as of projects in the pipeline. 
  • 2023: NHPC has inked Memorandum of Agreements (MoA) with Government of Arunachal Pradesh on August 12, 2023 for development of two hydroelectric projects in the State of Arunachal Pradesh with aggregate capacity of 3800 MW.
  • 2023: NHPC has won the bid to develop a 200 MW capacity Solar Power Project to be set up in the 1,125 MW RE Park of Gujarat State Electricity Corporation (GSECL) at Khavda in Kachchh district of Gujarat.
  • 2024: NHPC has signed a Joint Venture Agreement with Andhra Pradesh Power Generation Corporation (APGENCO) on September 27, 2024 for incorporation of a Joint Venture Company for implementation of Pumped Storage Hydro Power Projects and Renewable Energy (solar/ floating solar/ wind) Projects in Andhra Pradesh.
  • 2024: NHPC’s subsidiary -- NHDC has successfully commissioned the full 88 MW capacity of the Omkareshwar Floating Solar Power Plant (FSPV), Unit-D located in the reservoir of the Omkareshwar project, Madhya Pradesh with annual generation capacity of 204.58 MUs.
  • 2024: NHPC has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with BEML that aims to establish strategic cooperation for the development of advanced desilting and dredging solutions tailored for hydroelectric plants.
  • 2025: NHPC has commenced commercial operation of 107.14 megawatt (MW) solar capacity at Karnisar solar power plant, Bikaner, Rajasthan. 
  • 2025: NHPC has commenced commercial operation of 4th phase of part capacity of 53.57 MW with effective from June 30, 2025 of 300 MW Karnisar Solar Power Project, Bikaner.
