Hindustan Aeronautics(HAL) was created with the amalgamation of Hindustan Aircraft Ltd. and Aeronautics India Ltd. in 1964. It is engaged in the design, development, manufacture, repair, upgrade and servicing of aircraft, helicopters, aero-engines, avionics and aerospace structures. They mainly serve the Indian Airforce, Indian Navy, Indian Army and Indian Coast Guard. More than 98% of its revenue comes from India and the rest from exports. They have showcased their research abilities by developing Ajeet, Marut, MiG-21, MiG-27, Su-30 MKI, Cheetah and others.

Incorporated in 1940, Hindustan aeronautical Ltd (India) is involved in the design, production, repair and development of aircraft, helicopters, aero-engines, avionics, and aerospace structures to satisfy the demands of the defence and aerospace sectors.

Its corporate office is in Metro Station Cubbon Park, Shivaji Nagar, Bengaluru, Karnataka, India. The company aims at broadening its merchandise station to satisfy the growing requirements of the aerospace and defence market. Its network consists of 20 production units and eleven research and development centres equally divided over India to address the customer needs. The company is also listed on the Bombay stock exchange and the National Stock Exchange list.
Shri Walchand Hirachand, in association with the Mysore government, laid the foundation stone for the aerospace company in 1940.
In 1941, the Government of India acquired the company.
In 2016, Naini Aerospace Limited, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Hindustan Aeronautics Limited, came into existence. A year later, another subsidiary of the company Indo - Russian Helicopters Ltd was incorporated.

1963 - Established as a private limited company by the name Aeronautics India Limited.
In 1964, two pivotal companies Hindustan Aircraft Limited and Aeronautics India Limited came together and instituted Hindustan Aeronautics Limited. The contemporary company inaugurated a Helicopter factory in Bangalore in the same year.
In 1995, the status of the aircraft manufacturer changed from private to public. Half a decade later, the company established an Airport Service Centre in Bangalore.
The aerospace and defence company started manufacture Jaguar aircraft in 1979 and Swing-wing MiG-27M aircraft in 1982.
During the year 2015, it received a quality certification ISO(9001).
The manufacturer was honoured with India Pride Award 2014-15 for its significant contribution to the Indian defence sector.
The company was declared the Legend PSU of the Year 2013. In 2007, the helicopter designer was granted the title of Navratna company by the Department of Public Enterprises, Government of India.
