The company was founded by S Vishwanathan in the year 1979.
High energy batteries joined hands for the manufacture of 45Ah silver oxide zinc batteries with another pioneering company Yardney Electric Corporation based in the USA. The company signed a collaboration with DRDL in the development of Primary Reserve Batteries for PRITHVI, AGNI etc. and all the three variants of BrahMos. High Energy associated with DRDO Labs for the construction of torpedo batteries.

In the year 1996, High Energy Batteries expanded the installed capacity of Silver Zinc Batteries from 1010000 to 2400000 Ampere Hours.
In 1983, the company ventured to develop Nickel Cadmium batteries using the latest technology. The manufactured Nickel Cadmium Batteries are a major component in a number of the Indian air force and Indian navy fleet like Mirage, Sukhoi and Cheetah, Chetak.
During the year 1998, they received a quality certification ISO(9001), followed by another quality certification ISO(14001) in the year 2005 and one more ISO(45001) in the year 2018.
AWARDS AND RECOGNITIONS
The company received an R&D Award twice for torpedo batteries, once in 1990 and the other in 2004 from the Ministry of Science and Technology, Government Of India.
The Defence Ministry of India facilitated the company with Indigenisation Award for the year 1998-99 for its contribution to the development of the Indian navy.
High Energy grabbed an Appreciation Award by NSTL in 2007.
During the year 2004, the eminent company received the Defence Technology Absorption Award for its impeccable efforts made in manufacturing silver chloride magnesium reserve batteries for torpedo propulsion in defence forces.
