Overview

Grasim Industries, a flagship company of the Aditya Birla Group, ranks amongst the top publicly listed companies in India. Incorporated in 1947, it started as a textiles manufacturer in India. Currently, it has evolved into a leading diversified player with leadership presence across many sectors. It is a leading global producer of Cellulosic Fibres, Diversified Chemicals, Fashion Yarn and Fabrics producer in India. Implementing next phase of transformational growth journey, the company has entered paints business under the brand name ‘Birla Opus’. Out of the six plants to be set-up for manufacturing decorative paints across pan India locations, five plants have commenced operations. Leveraging the Group synergies, Grasim has launched ‘Birla Pivot’, the B2B online marketplace for building materials. Through its subsidiaries, UltraTech Cement, Aditya Birla Capital and Aditya Birla Renewables, it is also India’s prominent cement producer, leading diversified financial services player and clean energy solutions player.

Cellulosic Fibres:

  • Cellulosic Staple Fibre: The Cellulosic Staple Fibre (CSF) business continues to strengthen its position as one of the world’s leading producers of Manmade Cellulose Fibres (MMCF), built on a foundation of sustainability, innovation, and cost competitiveness
  • Cellulosic Fashion Yarn: The Fashion Yarn (Cellulosic Filament Yarn - CFY) business is driving innovation with sustainable cellulosic filament yarn. This is based on indigenously developed closed-loop technology, enhanced with European inputs. A pilot plant is being planned following a successful lab-scale proof of concept.

Chemicals: 

In 1972, Grasim’s chemicals business was set up to manufacture caustic soda for the company’s VSF unit. Currently, it is one of India’s largest caustic soda producers and is a market leader in the chlor-alkali segment. Over the years, the company’s chemicals business has created a strong foothold in the industry and offers a wide range of products from chlorine derivatives to epoxy. The business uses cost-effective membrane cell technology and is largely self-sufficient in power.

Building Materials:

  • Cement: UltraTech Cement is the largest manufacturer of grey cement, Ready Mix Concrete (RMC) and white cement in India. It is also one of the leading cement producers globally. Its operations span across India, UAE, Bahrain and Sri Lanka. In the white cement segment, UltraTech goes to market under the brand name of Birla White.
  • Decorative Paints: Aditya Birla Group launched paints business under the brand name 'Birla Opus'. Birla Opus Paints has been meticulously designed to meet the ever-changing needs of new India. We are setting a new standard for modern living spaces through superior product offerings.
  • B2B E-Commerce: Birla Pivot, the B2B e-Commerce business unit of Grasim Industries was launched in 2023. Birla Pivot reinforces vision to create a new-age, high-growth digital platform that catalyses the growth of small businesses in India and provides an impetus to the government’s vision of ‘Digital India’.

Financial Services: 

Aditya Birla Capital (ABCL) is the holding company for the financial services businesses of the Aditya Birla Group. ABCL’s subsidiaries have a strong presence across Protecting, Investing and Financing solutions. ABCL is a universal financial solutions group catering to diverse needs of its customers across their life stages.

Other Businesses:

  • Textiles: Grasim ventured into the textiles industry in 1949 by setting up Jaya Shree Textiles at Rishra, West Bengal. It has four strategic business units (SBUs) i.e., linen spinning, linen fabric, wool combing and worsted spinning. It is the only integrated linen factory in the country with state-of-the-art facilities equipped with the latest spinning, weaving and finishing systems from Switzerland and Italy.
  • Aditya Birla Renewables: Aditya Birla Renewables is an industry leader in clean energy solutions. With over a decade of experience in executing large-scale and complex renewable energy projects across India, the company is helping power the nation’s transition towards a greener tomorrow.
  • Insulators: Aditya Birla Insulators is India’s largest manufacturer of electrical insulators and is amongst the top four insulator manufacturers globally. It produces the widest range of insulators in India including insulators for transmission lines & substations, as well as equipment & railways. 

Business area of the company

Grasim is a leading global and Indian producer of Cellulosic Staple Fibre (CSF) and Cellulosic Fashion Yarn (CFY). As a key segment within the broader man-made textile fibre industry, Cellulosic Fibres represents Grasim’s commitment to innovation, sustainability, and excellence in the evolving world of textiles. y. In India, the company has constantly expanded the CSF market through indigenously developed second and third-generation fibres, known as Birla Modal and Birla Excel (Lyocell), respectively. The success of brand ‘LIVA’ can be attributed to its relentless focus on customer centricity over the years. Raysil, the fashion yarn, is Grasim's viscose filament yarn brand. It is a well-known brand renowned for its luxurious texture and sustainable origins, crafted from 100% natural wood pulp, offering a biodegradable and eco-friendly alternative to synthetic fibres.

  • 1950: Production of fabrics at Gwalior with imported man-made rayon.
  • 1954: VSF production commences at Nagda (Madhya Pradesh).
  • 1962: Inception of Engineering Division for plant and machinery for VSF.
  • 1963: Composite textile mill at Bhiwani (Haryana). 
  • 1968: Rayon production commences at Mavoor, Kerala.
  • 1972: VSF and Pulp plant at Harihar (Karnataka) based on in-house engineering and know-how. Nagda commences production of rayon grade caustic soda - for VSF production.
  • 1977: Grasim's third rayon plant - at Harihar, Karnataka - goes into production.
  • 1985: Cement Business started with capacity of 0.5 MTPA
  • 1985: Vikram Cement - Grasim's first cement plant goes on stream at Jawad (Madhya Pradesh).
  • 1987: Vikram Cement's second production line is commissioned.
  • 1991: A third production line is added at Vikram Cement. 
  • 1992: Grasim sets up Birla International Marketing Corporation (BIMC), a merchant exporter.
  • 1993: Vikram Ispat, India's third largest gas-based sponge iron plant is commissioned. Birla Consultancy & Software Services is set up, to provide IT consulting services and for software development. 
  • 1995: Grasim commissions two Greenfield cement plants - Grasim Cement at Rawan (Chattisgarh) and Aditya Cement at Shambhupura (Rajasthan).  Vikram Woollens, spinning unit at Malanpur (Madhya Pradesh) set up. 
  • 1996: The first phase of Grasim's fourth VSF plant is commissioned at Kharach (Gujarat).
  • 1998: AV Cell Pulp Mill at Canada acquired in a joint venture with other Group Companies and Tembec Inc.
  • 1999: Grasim's viscose staple fibre (VSF) and rayon grade pulp units at Mavoor are closed down owing to lack of raw material. 
  • 2000: The Lawson Competency Centre is set up as a division of Birla Consultancy & Software Services, the software arm of Grasim, following a tie up with Lawson Software (USA), among Fortune's top five private software companies. 
  • 2001: Four Ready-Mix Concrete plants commissioned with an aggregate capacity of one million cubic meters.
  • 2002: VSF Research & Application Centre set up at Kharach in Gujarat.
  • 2005: Acquire AV Nackawic Pulp Mill, Canada, in a joint venture with other Group Companies and Tembec Inc.
  • 2006: Forms joint venture company Birla Jingwei Fibres Company Limited and acquires VSF plant in China.
  • 2007: Eighteen ready-mix concrete plants commissioned.
  • 2009: Grasim hives off its sponge iron business by way of slump sale. Grasim commissions a greenfield cement plant at Kotputli (Rajasthan).Vikram Cement and Aditya Cement win the Federation of Indian Mineral and Industries' 'Social Awareness Award for the year 2008-09'.
  • 2010: Consolidation of the cement business under UltraTech Cement Limited.
  • 2011: Acquired Domsjo Fabriker AB (Domsjo), Sweden, in a joint venture with Group Companies.
  • 2012: Acquired assets of Terrace Bay, a paper grade mill, in a JV with Group company Thai Rayon, in July 2012.
  • 2013: Caustic soda and Epoxy plant commissioned at Vilayat.
  • 2014: Grasim’s state-of-the-art Viscose Staple Fibre plant is commissioned at Vilayat, Gujarat.
  • 2015: Merger of ABCIL with Grasim
  • 2016: Aditya Birla Chemicals (India) merged with Grasim Industries.
  • 2017: Merger of Aditya Birla Nuvo with Grasim.
  • 2018: Grasim Industry has been ranked 205 in the list of ‘Global 2000 - Growth Champions 2018’ by Forbes Magazine USA.
  • 2019: Grasim Industries signed a definitive agreement to acquire 100% equity shareholding of soktas India Private Limited from Its current Promoters, for an enterprise value of Rs 165 crore.  
  • 2020: Grasim commissioned the third generation 16 KTPA specially fibre plant using in-house green technology at Kharach, Gujarat. 
  • 2021: Grasim forays into paints business with Pan-India presence
  • 2022: Navyasa by Liva, a contemporary saree brand launched
  • 2022: Aditya Birla Group flagship Grasim announces foray into B2B e-commerce platform for building materials.
  • 2023: Grasim's B2B e-commerce business for building materials, 'Birla Pivot', is operational and catering to customers in Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, and Delhi from July 2023
  • 2024: In April 2024, commercial production was announced for Birla Opus in three pants 
  • 2024: Birla Pivot crossed a milestone revenue for Rs 1000 crore in its first year of operations.
